Superstitions / Zabobony Acrylic on canvas 140x100cm or inquiries as to availability, email While it would be inaccurate to claim the Poles as being a deeply superstitious nation visitors will be delighted to know the country has more than its fair share of quirky beliefs and customs. The international code of fearing smashed mirrors and walking under ladders is of course commonplace. More alien to the foreigner will be the belief that lighting a cigarette off a candle spells the imminent death of a sailor; something to bear in mind when sparking up in a beer garden, particularly if you are near the sea. If you’re thinking of getting married, getting hitched in a month that features the letter ‘r’ brings good luck. Get married in May (Maj) for instance and you could be tempting the early death of yourself or your partner. Beware when seating people for a meal. An unmarried woman should never sit at the corner of a table as this will ensure she stays unmarried. Serial killers should be aware that keeping a corpse in a house over the weekend means a relative of the deceased will also die; a crafty way of increasing your killing tally. Spilling salt or cutting your hair before an exam also spells disaster. In fact, if you’ve got final exams coming up, don your finest red underpants; you’ll pass with flying colours. If you’ve got kids, tie a red ribbon around their pram to fend off evil. If you get defecated on by a bird, don’t worry, good luck lies around the corner. Finally, our favourite; if a chimney sweep comes into view hold any button until you see a man in glasses, make a wish, and your desires will soon come true. https://www.inyourpocket.com/warsaw/Superstitions_70585f

Marcelina is a UK based contemporary artist working with mixed media approaches to print, painting and drawing. She often draws inspirations from her Polish heritage, looking to religious iconography and folk tales, as well as childhood memories, the power of dreams, spirituality, sexuality, and the human condition. According to her Mum, Marcelina started drawing before she could properly speak. She has been featured in publications including Booooooom, Bomb, Art Maze, Create Magazine, Digital Arts, Vogue, Refinery29, The NY Times, Der Spiegel and Ballad Of Magazine. She exhibits work throughout the UK as well as internationally and was a featured artist of the 2017 edition of the London Illustration fair and led a The Big Draw sketch walk for Apple. Marcelina is also a founder of artbrand Mesh Studio. Marcelina says ‘I like to play at the tense borders between lust and innocence; joy and sadness; fun and pain. My interest in juxtaposition comes from my origins and fascination with East European culture which was eloquently described by Grayson Perry as ‘nowhere else could such horrific grief be met with such fairly-tale romanticism’. ‘I tend to utilise nature as a metaphor for everyday feelings and headaches. My recent work also dwells into themes of self acceptance, body positivity, representations of the female sexuality, gender, migration, and society. Although some of the subjects I take on are often quite dark I like to think that there is some humour and light in my finished artwork.’
