About The Artwork

The Heart Sutra Mantra calligraphy is brushed on rice paper and is ready to be framed. This calligraphy depicts the Heart Sutra Mantra in Japanese characters saying: 'Gyatei gyatei, haragyatei, harasogyatei, boji sowaka'. The Sanskrit version of this mantra is : "Gate gate, paragate parasangate, bodhi svaha." The English translation is: "Gone gone, gone beyond, gone completely beyond, enlightenment hail!" This mantra, spoken at the end of the Heart Sutra, is a wisdom mantra that is said to reconnect us with our Buddha nature, our inherent awakened nature. The characters are brushed in the kaisho style, the regular script of Japanese calligraphy, a calligraphic style that gives the calligrapher less artistic freedom than other styles. But at the same time this style highlights the inherent beauty and grace of the Chinese and Japanese characters. Size of the calligraphy in cm: 42 x 29 x 0.2 cm.

Shipping & Returns

Delivery Time:Typically 5-7 business days for domestic shipments, 10-14 business days for international shipments.

My artwork comprises Zen calligraphy, watercolor and ink paintings, and abstract calligraphies. My mediums are ink, watercolors and natural pigments on rice paper, mainly Xuan paper. I wield the Chinese and Japanese brush, preferably the flexible sheep's hair brush. Many of my Zen calligraphies express the Emptiness teaching from the Heart Sutra, which has been the original inspiration for my Japanese calligraphy artwork. Other calligraphies focus on the teachings of the Diamond Sutra, Platform Sutra, or depict Zen koan, Zen poetry or single kanji. In my watercolors and ink paintings I strive for a pictorial synthesis of the subject, in the spirit of Japanese ink painting, using bold washes and vivid brush strokes.
