While travelling through Belgium I came across a re-enactment scene and was drawn to this self absorbed individual.I apply the pastel in successive layers to achieve a soft structure with some areas having a more robust textured element. I use artists hogs hair brushes to manipulate some of the work to give it density. The work is painted on a Superior Studland coloured board as I like the rigidity and fine surface. Finally the pastel is fixed to protect it and the work only needs framing to to make it ready to hang and should preferably be framed under glass with a mount.

About The Artwork

The image depicts the declining years of a professional boxer. I apply the pastel in successive layers to achieve a soft structure with some areas having a more robust textured element. I use artists hogs hair brushes to manipulate some of the work to give it density. The work is painted on a Studland board as I like the rigidity and fine surface. This work is on a Studland board, no varnish finish is applied because of its absorbency. So the painting should be framed with a mount and under glass. I recommend at least a 60mm wide frame, narrow frames on large paintings do not sit well and have a tendency to warp.

Born in Gloucester and living and working in Cheltenham UK. I like to work in acrylic because it allows me to experiment, making changes quickly is paramount when wishing to explore your options. I suspect like most figurative artists I find drawing and painting the human form wholly embedded with human behaviour. The desire to secure more than a representation of a persons movement, the spilling of light over contours or the various other physical facets is the reason we continue to make paintings. To recast emotions in texture, colour and pattern and to make it still, perhaps this is a measure of a successful painting. I have sold work around the world, to individuals and organisations and have produced award winning public art (usually with a colleague) for various institutions.
