Totonaca Crisanto Painting

Crisanto first sat for me in 2002 and I have now returned to the painting to add more definition. He had just finished flying, he is a Totonaca young man who flies through the air, descending down from a tall pole in a spiritual “dance “ believed to have been done originally to bring rain. The Totonaca dreamed of flying with the god Quetzacoatl. This ritual is now done throughout Mexico and the ritual has been recognized by UNESCO. We did not paint for long periods as it was sunny and hot on the malecon, the boardwalk, and he had just completed the climb up the thirty foot pole and the descent through the air. We were both hot and dazed, it seemed. He made his own costume and had such a great name. We were two strangers, each one doing something mysterious to the other.
