About The Artwork

I loved living in Laguna Beach. The beach is so magical. It presents a palette of color like no other... About my Art: I am inspired by the notion that I can create calming, soothing, meditative art. I choose photography because it is the only capture medium that can shows the real world in an abstract way. In this work, I saw the remembrance of the passing of an object from its original use to a relic of the past. Real objects transformed into beautiful abstract art. I paint with my camera/lens to create my art in the camera at the time of exposure. I am interested in showing a side of reality through abstraction that can only be seen through the camera. The time has come to change how we view photography and show how it can capture a world of abstraction beyond what we can see with the naked eye. I have been a photographer, of some sort, most of my life. In my recent works seen here, my intension is to pushing the limits of what we normally expect from a photograph that originates in the camera. These works of art are created in the camera at the time of exposure. Call me a purist, however, it has taken me a lot of experimentation to arrive at works that translate well as abstract art without having to manipulate the images after the initial creation in the camera. I do not post manipulation, only some post processing to bring out the color(s) of the original object(s) photographed. In the mid 1800’s a new relationship to reality and its representation changed the art scene with the invention of photography. According to Cornell University, because photography could record visual data better than an artist could, artists began to look for other emphases in rendering reality. This led to a number of modern movements in painting technique such as impressionism, abstract expressionism, cubism, surrealism and futurism to name a few. One could say artists were creating art that the camera could not mimic. Without losing sight of the bigger picture of the paradigm shift in painting spurred by photography, I have chosen to reverse the paradigm and take a page from the artists that changed painting to show us a new way of looking at life, reality and art. Only now, I am using the very instrument that changed painting to emulate the abstract world that lie in the mind of the abstract painter. The camera, the only true recorder of visual data reality, now becomes the only instrument to truly record reality in an abstract way. Not solely from the mind of the artist applied with a medium, these works of art are photographs of actual objects of color in a way as to create abstract art. The objects that I photograph are found objects. I like to think of them as my palette of colors. And I never arrange, create or alter the original objects (palette), only photograph them in their original environment. I love what I do! Prints: I will also prints on canvas or aluminum for a richer, deeper saturation of the colors. Other sizes are available, please contact me for pricing and availability at www.garbenedick.com Limited edition - 1 of 30 Printed on archival metallic photo paper to give it deep, rich saturated colors. The work is signed by the artist on the back of the print and includes a certificate of authenticity only when you purchase as an Original. Remember, this is an original photograph. There is no manipulation! I am interested in showing a side of life through abstraction that can only be seen through the camera. Gar’s passion in photography, and in life, is to make the invisible, visible. He takes the everyday ordinary patterns in life and changes the way we see them, the way we feel them. He would say, “The photograph finds me and I become the vehicle through which the art finds its way to the print.” Gar grew up on a small farm in Pennsylvania. There he learned about hard work and the connection we all have with the land and mother earth. His love of the outdoors and nature prompted him to engage in an education in Landscape Architecture with a degree from Penn State University. After college, he used photography as a creative outlet starting strictly with black and white. When he moved to Southern California in the mid 70’s, he studied under Arthur Taussig and John Upton at Orange Coast College. Not seeking a degree, Gar was free to explore at his own pace, in his own way. From there he worked in photography, design and media production for over 35 years. Gar fell in love with the notion of stopping time and taking another, closer look at everyday life. He noticed he would focus on the things most people never see. “I am moved more by exploring the details of the obvious, then I am of the obvious itself.” Gar has been involved with photography (analog and digital) in almost every aspect of his design and visual communications career. Even though Gar’s photography has always been a creative outlet, today, as an emerging artist, he is more interested in pure art from the camera, exploring other ways of seeing the world through a camera lens. “I am always looking for what the camera can do when I give it free reign with no expectations.” “I love what I do!”
