Adventures in 4K - I The network is an exemplary carrier and distributor of desire. But what happens to this desiring machine when it is forced to negotiate with another machine, one that is not adequately equipped to accurately read and represent the data stream. Despite the tension that ensues, the machines do not give up but continue to feed the screen with random and rearranged bits of code, corrupted data and dislodged pixels. The screen is lit up with these floating bits of salvaged data as the machines continue to rub fiercely against each other. The relentless machinic effort to be true to its function of representation and create a coherent desiring image, in turn, sees the emergence of the glitchier, other image(s), or non-image. Images that are layered deep within the original image in parts or in whole. Images that are broken, multiple, imperfect, uncanny, dirty, messy and far removed from the promise of ultra sharpness and 4k resolution. But they also remain original and unique in the way they cannot ever be replicated. The data mashup, a result of the tension between technologies, is random and unpredictable. One from amongst the millions of possible permutations of irregularities that might translate very differently onto the screen. If the goal of pornography is to create desire by violating and breaking norms, as if the feature of most pornography, then there is a similar behaviour evident here. This particular unlayering of the desirable image and revelation of a series of images hidden within itself is nothing short of an unclothing. A machinic stripping down to focus on its own individual parts, is a pornographic and voyeuristic unveiling of its own pornographic self and intent. -- My area of questioning is desire and pornography, and how they constitute a political discourse that is central to the society. Through experiments in text, video and images I create experiential locations that facilitate and engage with the abundant and pornographic networks that we are a part of.
