About The Artwork

Multiple, layered exposures of autumn leaves catch a setting sun among a dense network of fibers and veins. Many layers of graphite and pastel drawings are delicately embedded within the dense, brittle foliage. A mixed media / photographic composite. Edition of 7 + 1 A/P and 1 P/P. Printed for the artist by Brooklyn Editions, New York City. Japanese Kozo Fine Art Paper (Thin), by Epson Europe. Comes with Certificate of Authenticity. Archival pigment inks printed with Epson P20000. *Note on Papers: This piece is offered as two separate Editions: a Japanese bamboo paper (this listing), as well as on a Hahnemuehle Silk Baryta paper. The wonderful Japanese Kozo {bamboo) paper developed by Gary Wornell for Epson Europe is not available in North America, so small quantities have been imported for specific works. This paper bears some resemblance to the excellent Awagami Factory papers, but I feel this particular fibre-based Kozo also exhibits an exceptional saturation point and very deep black levels. It is also highly durable for such a thin, translucent material.

PRÉCIS + PROCESS + PAST-PRESENT: PRÉCIS: Light continuously shifts and suffuses. Never quite known, light occasions fresh perspectives for the attentive eye. Photography for me inhabits a space somewhere between poetry and motion picture film, my primary areas of advanced training. INSPIRATION: As many of my recent photos were taken in New York, I sometimes reflect upon the wisdom of gifted New York photographer, Saul Leiter. Leiter suggests, "there are things that are out in the open, and there are things that are hidden, and life has more to do, the real world has to do, with the things that are hidden. You think?" I offer my recent work in a spirit of discovery, a search for "the things that are hidden." PRINTMAKING PROCESS: Signature editions printed exclusively for the artist by Brooklyn Editions' Master Printmaker, New York City. PAST-PRESENT: I grew up as an artist, and gradually branched into other media. Crossing boundaries and investigating form naturally extend my creative and writerly output. Earlier, I worked on aesthetics with late philosopher Jean-François Lyotard. Temporal and phase transitions -- chemical, Kantian, disjunctive -- and a delight in the process of naming inform and inflect my work.
