About The Artwork

n the spring of 2005, I attended the annual festival in Nikko, Japan, honoring the great shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu. Among the events held was an archery competition, in which archers in full regalia would ride fast on horseback shooting at wooden targets along the course. It was an overcast day, and the riders were in the shade of the trees, so it was too dark to be able to use a fast enough shutter speed to freeze the action. Instead, I used the long shutter speed to my advantage by following the riders along during the exposure, getting them relatively sharp while at the same time blurring the background with motion. This is a silver gelatin print, made with 11 x 14 inch fiber based paper. The image size is 9 7/8 x 12 3/8 inches. It was printed by the photographer in a darkroom - not by a machine connected to a computer. The print was made in 2010 and is number 2 in an edition of 25. It will be shipped in a 16 x 20 inch matte. This photograph was included in the juried exhibition, Far Away Places, at the Darkroom Gallery in Essex Junction, Vermont, in 2014.
