ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Keywords: sepia, spiritual, square, temple, wave, Bali, culture, Tanah Lot, meditative, mist, monochrome, Bali, moody A small balinese temple in the famous Tanah Lot temple complex in Bali, and is a part of the series "One". ONE "One" is my personal journey of solitude It is my safe haven, a connection with the unknown It is how I feel when I'm out there; a union It is the beauty unseen to our naked eyes When I'm alone out there, and a connection with the unknown is established, it feels like a union. The long exposure technique brings unpredictability, and I bask in the feeling that I cannot fully control the outcome; The images I love seem to only emerge when the universe takes over. It feels more like a very fulfilling collaboration, and the results often surprise & delight me. It's like a very pleasant gift. I hope when viewing the image, those feelings resonate and brings peace within you. ------ The image is a long exposure single shot. The painterly effects happened in camera. Lightroom and Photoshop were used for cleaning, tonal adjustments and sharpening. As a visual artist I am interested in the unseen. It’s not the looks, but the usually unclear, yet deep feel that attracts me. I think of my works as poetry. Motion & focus blurs with lens tilt & shift used in reverie leads to vague images, allowing viewers to dream their own interpretations of my works. --- I was living in Berlin back in 1996 when I bought my first SLR camera for trips to Egypt, Greece and Turkey. Over the moon with 3 photos out of 14 rolls of films, I was hooked with photography, and decided to make the camera a permanent necklace. I neglected my automotive engineering study for two and a half years, but eventually finished it and worked as a passenger car development engineer at The Mercedes-Benz Technology Center in Sindelfingen. Moving back to Bali in 2004 with my wife to raise our baby daughter, I turned my hobby into a profession and setup PhotoFactory with her. Ten years later, I started doing fine art photography. Connection is my favourite subject. It could be anything, to which I feel a connection. I don’t see the final image in front of me nor in my head when I start clicking, but instead let the universe take over. With the techniques of long exposure with camera shake, lens tilting and shifting, I sort of give up control when an image is being created. My works are simple and vague, but as we look at them, we discover more and more, visually and emotionally. It keeps them interesting for a long time, and we can always come back and be with them.
