About The Artwork

This vintage architecture is from the 60's, when cars had fins and architects had fun. To reinforce the 60's architecture, I used collage to add polka dots and metallic papers. I photograph the buldings with architectural lenses, then print the images on clear film. By hingeing the left side of the clear film positive to a sheet of drawing paper, I can open the film like a page in a book, and paint the reverse side of the film with with acrylic paint, while adding pastel and collaged paper on the drawng paper. When the 2 layers are closed, you can look through the clear film to the layers of paint and collage below. I get a high quality scan done of the photo collage, then have it printed on a 44 inch professional printer with an expert print operator. I then proof the print carefully, and reprint until it is perfect. Because of the amount of metallic areas in the image, I decided to make the final print on an archival metallic paper with a bright white base.

My studio is in West Oakland, a neighborhood that is transitioning from industrial manufacturing to live-work spaces. I am looking at human spaces in transition. Due to gentrification and redevelopment, many buildings awaiting a makeover are covered in graffiti and multiple layers of paint, becoming like ” found paintings”. These layered wonders suit the process I work with, and also serve as records of these neighborhood changes. I print the photographic image on clear film instead of paper, adding paint, collage or pastel behind the transparent film image. This enhances the dimensionality already inherent in the transparent positive film. This double layer is scanned and printed up to 60 inches on watercolor or photo luster paper.
