About The Artwork

Photography: Black & White and C-type on Paper. Berlin 2000. At the turn of the century this city seemed poised to become a leading global arts hub. With so much history surrounding the rebirth of Berlin, Delves set out to capture the spirit of this reinvigorated city. These beautifully historical images were painstakingly created from architectural compositions. The essence of a city in the middle of recreation feels modern and renewed. The work owes a great deal to three legendary Australian photographers. Max Dupain, Wolfgang Sievers and John Gollings. Who influenced both directly and indirectly with the sense of graphic interplay and compositional dynamics in architecture. In the selected portfolio, Delves captured the images on a Linhof Technikardan using 4X5 Fuji Provia and then scanned the images to allow the manipulation of the photographs to strip away distracted elements and reveal the simplicity of the architecture. Photography’s great gift to the artist is a starting point to create a story within the images. The power of the Berlin images at large scale holds the viewer captive and not until the exhibition is finished do you have an understanding of the artists vision. Delves kept the series intact and unsold until now and this is the first time the images have been shown completely. Greg Delves was born in Melbourne Australia in 1964. Educated in Melbourne and mentored by master photographer John Gollings. Where he honed his passion for art and architecture before starting a freelance career in photography. The skillful composition of light and color lends itself to beautiful arrangements of both architecture and still life images. Delves is interested in the graphic interplay between objects and space in his images. A dedication to the future of digital photography and post manipulation of the compositions is his goal to create a future language where both art and photography perfectly balanced. Delves has lived and worked in New York since 1997.
