'Blue Africa', from ‘Underwater Sculpture’ series by Maya Almeida.

he Underwater Sculpture’ series is part of a personal project captured in the ocean. The series was shot underwater at the end of day to evoke wonder and magic using silk fabric originally from India.

The shoot involved negotiating with local Egyptian authorities to gain access to the right part of the ocean. Captured on the night of the Strawberry Full Moon in early June with natural light in the Southern Red Sea. Light and water were particularly harmonious. After a few days trying to work the fabric around models, I realised that once the human element was removed, and the fabric sculpted using feet, hands and natural water motion, images took on a life of their own with light behaving the way it only does in water.

A limited edition of 15 pieces available, 60 x 60cm. (approx 24 x 24 inches)

Printed direct onto museum grade archival paper with a 5cm white border

Comes with signed certificate of authenticity, and a label signed by artist with name of artist, piece and edition number, which can be affixed to back when framed. Certified for 100+ years.

Both pragmatist & dreamer, Maya is an Award Winning Visual Artist working with Moving Image, Light & Sound. What has inspired her to create is the power of imagery. Its beauty and its truth drawn from life’s spectrum have the ability to transcend the human spirit. London is home but Maya is originally from Portugal where she was raised by the sea. After a science degree from Imperial College, her career took a sharp turn. So, as an artist she is mostly self-taught - from stints at Central Saint Martins, training with lighting manufacturers to learning from some of the greatest image makers such as Tim Flach and Lois Greenfield. The underwater environment is the physical manifestation of silence. Unlike sound, light travels more slowly through water presenting creative challenges & opportunities...In this intimate space one is sensitised to movement & form and this creative process becomes intuitive. An obsessive aesthetic and a sense of wonder for the fluidity of motion drew Maya to photograph. The eventual role of space, rhythm & sound occurred organically as a natural part of a creative evolution, with technology playing an increasingly central role as an enabler for the work, both in its creation and its display. Drawn to the mysterious, Maya instinctively creates work that pulls away from a single reality and is less about what is seen and more about what is sensed - free from the restrictions of space or thought. A language based on the principle of a single thread connecting all forms of life without division, except in our perception of it. Maya's Fine Art work exists in public and private collections and has been recognised by juried international exhibitions and competitions. Collaborations with a range of commercial & private clients include CHI & Partners, Y&R Branding, Orion Publishing, OneDrop Foundation, the Lisbon Oceanarium, Crowood Press, Egoista Magazine, BalbirSingh, Dance UK, AD Dance Company, AD Dance, D&B Performing Arts, The English National Ballet, the Akram Khan Dance Company, Body of People & The Nureyev Medical Foundation.
