This work was inspired by my mother who is all things feminine. She once bought two works of art in Australia and carried them all the way home to Ireland and they were in a similar vein to this one. When I am creating my works I often find myself saying "this is one Mum would like". I would hope that viewers of this image would put their own story onto this image. I recently sold a work of art to a lady author who said she puts paintings of women on the wall in front of her desk and uses them as inspiration to write her books about them. I can think of no greater honour that to have someone make up a whole book based on one my images. I have sold my work as book covers and so I know they are pictorial stories as such but to have a whole book written about my work gives me a kick I have to admit. My images have my own stories of course and this one is no different. In case you didnt guess its one of sorrow. Of finding myself on my knees. Alone. Left to look after my four young daughters after my husband passed away very suddenly and young. The sorrow I felt has no words to express it and so I do that through my artwork. Its been six years since he passed away and two of my daughers have gone to college and two are still in school. There are good days and bad days even today but mostly good I have to say. Some days I find myself like the woman in this image, ragged, torn, worn down, on my knees and sorrowful but they are less and less as time passes and for that and for my four beautiful daughters I am of course most grateful.
