About The Artwork

Cave 5 of 8 in a collection of 'cave dwelling' : notions of: tradition, nature, erosion, impact, effect and fragility. Elements and their impact - on us and the external cathedrals we relate to, culturally and emotionally.Tradition, nature, erosion, impact, effect and fragility. 150,000 year old sandstone - the weathered result of ancient sediment, lakes, volcanic eruptions - wind, heat, cold and bands of resistant quartz. Spaces and places of worship - all relative to culture, habitat, custom and geography. Cathedrals, temples, mosques, shrines, synagogues - all places specifically designed for focused connection with the divine. Shells of intention. To Indigenous Australians, these ancient caves have for (more than) 80,000 years - served as protection, spaces of ritual, meetings, shelter and connection to 'country' (a term reflecting the unity of humans with the ineffable divinity of nature). These caves/sacred spaces have recently been 'signed off' for destruction by Santos (Coal seam gas miners). Politics, greed and disrespect for the Traditional Custodians of the Land.. It's like pissing in a place of worship before destroying the whole temple. Would Santos get the tick of approval to raze the Vatican? To mine Mecca? I took these photos with reverence. Grateful to have been, that afternoon, the only one there at the caves. In the middle of the Pilliga forest. Knowing the imminent fate of the ancient site, as I walked around, I spoke to the caves, the rocks, the carvings and paintings. I talked to the ancestral spirits - trying to energetically convey my apologies for the buffoons of the world - those whose diamond-encrusted blinkers obscure them from seeing the gold in the natural light of sunset on sandstone. I was apologising for my 'kind'- for those unable to 'see' the value in revering the site, preserving the caves, protecting the energy. The ancient, precious value of 'that' which exists outside the boundaries of current, arbitrary and fiscal delusion.
