ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This photograph is from a project on the ecology of cold mountain streams in California. Like this image, many of the photographs were taken in shallow running water. I could not see what I was photographing but used the camera at arm's length to record whatever I could. Such 'random' methods recall the work of artists like John Cage and William Anastasi. It also echos the science methods I used in the field for scientific sampling. Is there a convergence of science and art? In any case, the photo shows the architecture of stream insects that glue grains of sand together to make shelters in the running water. Imagine millions of these insects in a stretch of stream, choosing grains of sand and pasting them in place generation after generation. Quite a collection! Prints are limited to an edition of 30. I print them myself on Moab Exhibition Luster 300gsm acid free paper on an Epson P800 pigment printer for the highest archival durability in digital imaging. Your print will be signed and numbered on the back, and ships in a tube. Images are printed without borders. For additional sizes and pricing, please contact me.

I am a visual artist using writing, drawing and photography, and creating installations for unusual sites and clients. I grew up a Los Angeles suburb in a landscape re-imagined and transformed by human engineering. In responding to that influence, I work to understand how particular spaces and metaphors illuminate universal themes such as sunlight and shade, written language or water systems. I have been working as an artist for four decades and am dedicated to the evolution of my work and the advancement of the field. For more about what I do please visit my website
