Ripley's portrait of the 'American Horse Of The Year 2014 & 2016’ stood in front of the Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles.

Primary photography of California Chrome was completed in April 2015.

"Having been in Los Angeles creating some background imagery for 'future ideas' and taken numerous images of the Concert Hall, when thinking about the environment in which to place California Chrome it seemed appropriate to place him in front of the contemporary metal clad building rather than a more traditional thoroughbred scene".

Many photographs of the building had been taken, but in order to flow the dramatic lines of the architecture around the anatomy of California Chrome, elements were changed such as adjusting the orientation of the building and extending the foreground paving in order to give the correct perspective. Sky was added and colour tones carefully blended throughout the portrait, which all add to the cohesiveness of the final piece.

British artist, Ripley, works with high resolution digital composite photography to create large-scale pieces. His primary focus is working with Thoroughbred Racehorses, creating a feel of the equine master painters but using modern methods to create works of incredible detail and clarity. Working at magnifications of over one-thousand percent, pictures can take between 200-500 hours to complete. Commissioned pieces include the portrait of ‘Estimate’ for Her Majesty The Queen. Personal works include ‘Leopard Spotted Horse with Dalmatians in a Landscape’ and non-equine imagery such as the ‘Girl With Flag’ series. Ripley has recently completed a five year project creating 12 large-scale works for the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment, to be exhibited in 2023.
