About The Artwork
The California Mountain King Snake is one of our most beautiful reptiles. This one was found in Yosemite National Park at around 4000 feet of elevation. I usually see about one a year even though I am in the park for most of the warm season.. This snake is non-poisonous even though it very closely mimics the very poisonous coral snake. It kills its prey by by constriction. These snakes have a reputation of killing and eating rattlesnakes. I was with a small group when we came upon this event. The snake completely swallowed this wood rat, even though the rat is much bigger in diameter than the snake.
