About The Artwork

Born in Norwalk, Connecticut, I now make my home in the beautiful and creatively rich city of Asheville, North Carolina. Asheville is a city that values the wealth of its natural environment and the mountains that surround my home inspire me every day and manifest themselves into my artwork. The grounds and gardens of the nearby Biltmore Estate, designed by Frederick Olmstead, permeate my images with their meticulously arranged flora. My other inspirations include Henri Rousseau, the Japanese art technique Oshibana, and several types of art that use overlapping images to suggest movement - such as cave art, religious imagery, and Muybridge's photography. My medium is photography, isolated and assembled digitally into collage. All photographs are taken by me. I try to minimize any manipulation of the individual photos - restricting myself to edits that could be achieved by analog means. Plants and "mountains" are photographed with a macro lens. This is simply because I love the fine details of mineral specimens, and I enjoy the unfamiliar plant shapes that suggest the flora of Rousseau and Bosch. My education and previous artistic output has been contained in the world of animation. While that art form still informs my collage photos, I have left that career and transitioned into a full time fine artist. My current imagery is self-taught in a way. They don't spring out of any traditions or movements that I am aware of but I hope that my techniques and images are unique and engaging in their own right.
