The Solar Eclipse in March 2015 offered a unique opportunity to capture something out of the ordinary. I'd been working with Jamie as a model for a few months, trying to capture the sun and moon with him against the horizon, and lining up his position with iconic Edinburgh landmarks in the background - like Edinburgh Castle with a crescent moon. It seemed logical to take this a step further and to position Jamie in front of the Solar Eclipse. Having done my calculations, Jamie was dispatched to the top of the cliffs that overlook Edinburgh city centre, and I placed myself on the shadowline in a kids playpark below, some 280m away. As millions of photographers across Europe prayed for clear skies, as they pointed their lenses skyward, I offered my hopes for varying amounts of cloud, to help filter the strength of the sun. I used a variable ND filter to help too, so that I could get the perfect exposure when the cloud thickness varied. We use the Arms Aloft motif quite often in our images, especially when faced with the sun, moon, or other celestial event. It just feels right to open your arms, as a welcoming gesture, as a celebration of what we see in front of us, and to worship the beauty of our planet and the universe beyond. This is a single exposure, taken 280m from Jamie using a Nikon D800 with 28-300mm lens at 300mm, f/8, 1/125 sec, ISO 100. It is a Limited Edition of 50, and is printed at 24x16 inches on Titanium Lustre 280gsm Paper, and mounted behind an ivory mount in a simple black wooden frame, using high quality plexiglass to prevent breakage in transport. The mount is numbered and signed by myself and the model Jamie Gray.
