Children Playing Marbles, Kabul - Limited Edition of 3 Photograph

I lived in Kabul for over three years, making the documentary film Angels Are Made Of Light. While there I also made a series of detailed panoramic images - mostly of street life in Kabul. The pictures are both beautiful to look at as art and also serve as revealing documentary images of Afghanistan during this moment in history - the end of the Karzai era. Children Playing Marbles shows a complete Kabul neighborhood scene in the old city. A group of children play marbles while others look on. A boy has paused with his wheelbarrow filled with water jugs to eat an apple and watch the game. Girls stand at a distance. Behind the children the neighborhood winds its way up the hillside as the sun ducks below the ridge line. This panorama will continue to offer up more details, the longer you look at it. Panoramas from this series are like stories in themselves, telling of a culture and a place and a people - and how they live now. Art and Anthropology and Politics all rolled into one. This is a piece that - in the future - will tell a true story about the past. This image I have determined to print in a very limited edition of only three prints at this 64-inch wide scale. The signed limited edition print is 64 inches wide and 34 inches tall, which includes a 2-inch white border. This is a signed print, unframed and unmounted. This limited edition print is rendered on museum quality Hahnemühle Photo Rag paper, printed by a fine art printer using archival inks in the United States. About the paper: This is a 300 gsm paper, meaning it is 300 grams per square meter, and feels heavy and substantial to the touch. I am making photographs as one might make paintings - in the sense that these are not action shots, mainly, but contemplations. I like the matte texture of this paper for the way it creates a painterly richness and lack of glare from the surface. In the hands of my printer the black tones of the Hahnemühle paper are deep, substantial, and pleasurable to the eye, and the colors are rich and inviting. Hahnemühle papers are designed for archival storage and are acid-free, which makes them highly resistant to ageing. The paper is also lignin-free, which means it should consist of linters or alpha-cellulose. Lignin-free paper does not yellow.
