Close Encounters Photograph - Limited Edition of 1000

This is a photograph of a group of sea lions swimming around me. The photograph was made while free-diving in Baja Mexico’s Sea of Cortes. The image was made using conventional black and white film. The blurred murkiness of the water combined with the film’s distinct grain pattern gives the water a strong physicality, making it a picture element as important as the animals themselves. I feel this lends a certain mystery to the animals, and heightens the concept of just how alien an underwater environment can be to our senses. This image is printed using archival pigmented inks on Hahnemühle Photo Rag cotton paper, a museum quality paper. Presently offered as an open edition; each print is signed on the back. Print size dimensions are 16.5 x 23.4 inches (A2) including a narrow 1/8 inch white border. Artwork is shipped flat in a box. All prints are made personally by me in my home digital darkroom. I have an extensive printing background having taught color printing at Brooks Institute of Photography and the Maine Photographic Workshops. Please note that this photograph was made using high-speed black and white camera film, and thus has a pleasing but distinct grain pattern that will be visible on the print.
