Competing Desires explores the influence of photographic culture on our identity, its imposing and often contradictory expectations of women. Forging into the darkness of my competing desires I confront and explore the trappings of consumerism, motherhood, and identity.

The sculptures are made with found and created photographs, material waste, household objects. Fastening the disparate elements together to identify these powerful external forces, I investigate the narratives that flow between these real and imagined realities.

Each piece in this series is sold mounted to Dibond with a UV, archival luster laminate, in a hand painted, custom maple frame. They are in edition of 3 with 2 Artist Proofs each.

Naomi White is an artist and educator interested in ideas at the intersection of political ecology and photography. Focusing on the transformative power of photography to affect desire and change, much of her work questions how we can shift our focus away from the current racist, capitalist model of domination to one of equity and collective voice, for the sake of all people, animals and the planet. White won the Associate's Award at the Brand Art Center in 2024, the Hopper Prize in 2023, and PDN's Objects of Desire award in 2015. She has exhibited throughout North America and Europe, including art fairs Scope, Photo LA, and CAMP gallery. Recently she spoke about her work at the New Orleans Museum Of Art. Her recent three person show, Landscapes of Illusions and Possibilities was exhibited at Keystone artspace with colleagues Alicia Piller and Beth Davila Waldman.
