About The Artwork

The picture was taken in Foshan. People outside China rarely know this city and yet, nearly everyone has something produced in Foshan at home. I took this picture in Lignan Tiandi, a few blocks of beautifully restored historical buildings with many nice Cafés, boutiques and art shops. While I really like this area I found that it is just too neat and nice for pictures in good weather. I need rain to take meaningful pictures there.

I am a family doctor from Germany and have lived abroad working as a physician since 2006. Previously I have lived in Vietnam, Uzbekistan and Vanuatu and now I reside and practice medicine in Guangzhou, Southern China. Over the years photography has developed into my main interest aside from medicine. In my photography I try to portrait ordinary people and everyday life, the lights, moods and colours of Asia. I do most of my shooting in and around Guangzhou, Hong Kong and Singapore- places that are full of life and energy and amazing opportunities for capturing “real life” scenes. In my photography I try express my subjective experience as a foreigner, as an alien living within an unfamiliar world. My photos are essentially mood pieces or slices of life rather than documentary or travel shots. Unfortunately I never had time for any formal training in art and photography although it has been a passion of mine for years. My interest in photography was awakened by the work of the war photographer Henri Huet. However as I prefer to avoid wars and problem zones this influence may not be obvious. The most notable influences may be from the street photographers Saul Leiter and Jay Maisel, whom I deeply admire and try to emulate.
