About The Artwork

Displacement and Discoveries I use various camera formats (film and digital), 35mm slide projections and multiple exposures to examine the culture in which I live. I was raised in a Polish speaking home, yet everywhere else English was the designated language. As a migrant child I found myself pulled between the contrasting demands for linguistic assimilation made by the United States and those for linguistic preservation made by the Polish community and my extended family. Language is able to connect people transnationally to or disconnect them from other people and places. By using multiple exposures, layers and various photographic processes I try to bring a certain cohesion to the dual frame of reference, through which I compare my life experiences, events and situations from the points of view of both my society of origin and my host society. This work did not spring from a solely intellectual exercise but rather from a personal exploration of myself and to the culture(s) in which I live.
