About The Artwork

From tree, to wreck, to artwork... Desjardins highlights the fusion of sedentary life (the tree) and adventure (boats and bridges). Desjardins is a nomad...To find the materials she uses she is travelling the world by, train, motorbikes or sailboats with her husband and 2 kids since over 15 years. A sailing story from one of the Pacific Islands where Amelie has sailed and traveled for many years, well states the premise: "Every man is torn between two needs. The need of the Pirogue, that is to say of the journey of adventure, and the need of the Tree, that is to say of the rooting, of belonging to a community. Men are constantly wandering between these two needs, sometimes yielding to one, sometimes to the other until the day when they understand that it is with the Tree that the Pirogue is made.”The work emphasizes on the accumulation of scars, fossils, and memories through the passage of time and the omnipresence of nature. Her approach is based both on the recovery of materials and a lyrical vision of the passage of time. She is always seeking out lost treasures during her ocean crossings. Skimming beaches around the world in search of wrecks and stranded treasures, she builds her works from the wreckages of bridges and boats, juxtaposing poetic images on these reclaimed structures. Desjardins is part of private and museum collections. She had artist residencies, many solos and she participated in numerous national and international shows and was displayed at the Gardiner museum in Toronto. She was and is currently represented by renown galeries: Thompson Landry, Galerie Blanche, Arteria et Le Royer in Canada, Envie d’art, gallerieklund and Doorway in Europe.
