ABOUT THE ARTWORK
A skilled horseman, nomadic outlaw and national symbol of Argentina, the gauchos were a significant marginalised group who gained recognition between the mid-18th to the mid-19th century. Often known as 'mestizos' (mixed heritage particularly of European and indigenous heritage) the gauchos were one of the few groups that gained popularity within national folklore and literature as they appealed to the diverse groups that sat outside of the country's 'white' majority. Being raised by a Chilean Father and German-Argentinian mother in Sydney Australia, I have always carried a dissonance around belonging to a singular culture due to my mixed-cultural upbringing. The symbol of the gaucho stands as one of the few historical icons representing those that often exist between cultures.
