About The Artwork

This is a limited edition of signed and numbered 24" x 36" prints. A Certificate of Authenticity is included. These are printed on 100% cotton heavy weight fine art paper using the highest quality archival pigment inks. El Paso Golgotha is a photo montage I created for a border themed exhibit in 2015. The exhibition title was "Border Tapestry", hosted by the Chamizal National Memorial situated along the Rio Grande in El Paso TX. All of the artwork created for this exhibition somehow depicted the interwoven cultural encounters historic to the border region of the US and Mexico, which El Paso TX has always been a focal point. With this photo montage I began with an idea that came to me one day while driving through El Paso. There is a spot next to the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), along the Rio Grande, which at the point becomes the border between the US and Mexico and the state of New Mexico. I looked over at this particular spot as I drove and it occurred to me that in this rocky canyon full of electrical power lines stretching into the distance, it was like Mt Golgotha, and the power lines formed dozens of crosses. So I determined to hike into this area and photograph the rough, rocky canyon. But what else could I photograph and bring into this image that would convey my message? As I wanted to make direct reference to Mexico I visited a piñata shop in east El Paso. Selecting from hundreds I chose a simple red/green/white piñata that is very popular and is, in fact, simply called "Mexico". In the same shop they also had hundreds of crepe paper flowers. I chose some of them as well to include into the montage design. It's amazing to realize this rough mountain canyon lies in the heart of El Paso. Thousands drive by it on a freeway every day, but few really look at it. With my montage I force the viewer to see what is there. The montage layout came to me over days. I consider it more a cultural statement than an overtly religious one, but I wanted that to also be part of it, and thus created an arc shape over the top of the landscape image. The piñata "Mexico" speaks for itself, and the faded sepia-toned paper flowers represent the wishes and hopes of the tens of thousands who have congregated here and traveled across this border for hundreds of years. This "pass of the north" was indeed a key point in the travel route between Mexico City and Santa Fe after the Spanish conquest and exploration of the area.

I've had strong artistic inclinations from an early age. Music has been one of my great pursuits thru my university days. At that time my interest in photography began. My first B&W photos were still life attempts and night time shots of architecture at UNM. Years later I became interested in exploring studio photography of objects, then began working with people. Photographing the human form was of great interest to me and I began selling cards featuring my photographs almost as soon as I began this genre. Two years later I was offered a solo exhibition of this work, which was greeted with acclaim. That same year, 1994, I began my career as a full-time photographer and that has been my occupation since. I have continued to include fine art work along with my commercial endeavors, just as the artists of the middle ages, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, and Romantic periods did.In fact, most of these artists would not have made a distinction between the two. In my fine art work with objects and the landscape I am interested in the passage of time, of being and existence. Many of my still lifes could be called 'Zen' images, a term I am attracted to. With my landscapes I tend to respond to starkness more than color and lushness. This suits the area I have lived most of my life: the high desert environment of New Mexico. I also enjoy creating photo montages, often incorporating multiple images as a sequence or other sort of relationship. With my still lifes I have often photographed objects that have faded, or are completely dried up. They have not lost their beauty and interest for me, or even their 'life', but still contain powerful spirits in themselves.
