About The Artwork

Suminagashi - On the surface of the water The origin and development of a special artistic technique called Suminagashi, or “ink floating”, was practiced in Japan as early as the 12th century. “Delicate swirled patterns were produced on paper when colors of ink were floated on the surface of the water. The artist would drop circles of black and indigo blue ink into the water, then blow gently on the surface of the water to produce smoke-like patterns. Marbling later became popular with members of the Japanese royal court. They used a slightly different technique to produce Suminagashi. They would decorate the paper with Sumi-ink then immerse the paper in water. As the inks floated to the surface, beautiful patterns would appear.” (…) “The art of marbling spread throughout Europe and by the 17th century, Spain, England, France, Germany, Holland, and Italy produced marbled papers. However, few people knew how to marble paper and marblers were reluctant to share their knowledge. Various formulas and marbling techniques became guarded secrets. As demand for marbled paper grew, marble guilds were introduced. Master marblers trained apprentices in the various techniques, being careful not to share secret formulas and techniques. (Maurer-Mathison, Diane, 1991) Marbling techniques in Europe were linked to editorial production by adding at the beginning and end of the most prestigious and elaborate books. In this series I experiment and combine this technique with historical variations, changing elements or composition of the paints and pigments. This work is the first image to emerge from painting on water, no paper has yet been put on it to prime it. For this reason, this is the most ephemeral image of the process and its documentation is photographic. Works on paper can only be printed once, so they are one-of-a-kind originals. The elements, although similar, will never have the same arrangement as the paper has captured. The works resulting from this first work, whose other originals are on paper, are in the same series _ "Suminagashi - On the surface of water" This Fine Art print is the first of a limited edition to 30 gliceé prints with a max. of 2 A.
