Nathan Dean was passionate about photography, even during a distinguished academic career in science. A native of eastern Tennessee, he received a PhD in physics from Cambridge University and became a professor, a dean of science, a vice provost for graduate studies and research, and a university vice president. After he turned his attention fully to photography, his images won awards and were exhibited in numerous juried shows in New York, Atlanta, Fort Lauderdale, Minneapolis, and Los Angeles. In 2015, his work was published in both the Portfolio and the Single Shot editions of the highly regarded photography journal Black and White. His images suggest that what the eye sees is less important than what lies beneath. It may be a moment of emotional truth, when the masks we too often wear are dropped, allowing a glimpse of the soul; or the smallness of life in the largeness around us, which tries but fails to conquer hope. Something more important, something we can’t quite visualize, something intriguing and perhaps magical or else full of terror, waits for us just beyond the image. Like our future, it is unknown, but we yearn to find it.
