Signed certificate of authenticity included This photographic project builds on my own photographic exploration of the city of Naples where I contemplated and represented hunger as experienced through automatic gestures, in which eating is without taste and flavor. The self-preservation of human beings is achieved exclusively through voracious gestures . The novel “La pelle” (Skin) by Curzio Malaparte has inspired my artistic work on hunger in Naples. The author created sublime and dreamlike images starting from the mere description of the brutality and misery in the aftermath of the Second World War. I tried to reproduce the artistic operation realized by Malaparte in his writings through photography. By observing daily life of individuals who have become homeless as a result of the recent economic crisis, I created artistic images that cast lights on the misery of living in poverty in contemporary Italy. In experiences of deep misery, madness becomes a tragic act of awareness. Madness is a radical form of consciousness that brings to mind memories of a past life, of a lost happiness when needs were satisfied in the ordinary normality of everyday life. This is a reality which is not more, while in the here and now of misery, there is just absence, voracity, the pressing concern to survive and to deal with voids to fill. Madness becomes awareness when the shame of failure is so untenable and the societal lack of care of fellow human beings make individuals ‘victims
