About The Artwork

Frozen forest is a portfolio of 10 cyanotypes toned in a white oak gallnut powder solution. These images were shot in Brekkuskógur, a forest in south Iceland by Brúarfoss, close to Gullfoss. This was during a season of strong frost at the beginning of winter, before the first snows, where frozen crystals encased straws and branches. These are digital images manipulated to create digital negatives for the cyanotype process. The photos are 28 x 42 cm cyanotypes made on 42 x 57 cm 300g Saunders Waterford watercolour paper. The cyanotype process is an artisanal alternative photographic technique, originally from 1842. More than one print may be made based on the same image. Due to the organic nature of the process, each version is unique.
