About The Artwork
‘Gestalt’ is a German term signifying a particular formation, patterning, shape or even person. Every Gestalt is unique and so are you. I first encountered the word Gestalt and the associated idea of Gestalt Therapy about 25 years ago when I began training as an actor in London. Apparently it underpinned some of the exercises we did - although it was never explained how exactly this was achieved. Fast forward 25 years and I started exploring Gestalt Therapy - which, in some areas, has similarities to contemporary techniques such as Mindfulness. I finally realised how some of the Drama training was built on Gestalt principles where we had worked on "noticing" what was going on inside and outside ourselves, moment by moment. The Gestalt Therapeutic process goes further and crosses into other areas. You learn to listen to your own unique sense of what is true for you. It's a discipline that helps you become more present, which allows you to discover new, previously hidden perceptions and perspectives. With this artwork I wanted the explore the idea of thoughts and perceptions - dancing, moving and interconnecting behind the woman's face. Originally from Cheshire (UK), I started out painting with watercolour and later studied technical drawing as part of my engineering qualifications. Photography offered the perfect blend of art and science and my fascination began; travelling widely with my engineering work I found urban artistic inspiration in New York, Paris, Tokyo and Toronto. Settling in London over 20 years ago, I now live among neighbourhoods and buildings which support my passion for abstract, architectural and street photography. Influenced by my background, one could say I shoot with the eyes of an impressionistic painter and the mind of an engineer. I take inspiration from everyday objects, surfaces and scenes which are often transformed into the extraordinary, surreal or abstract. I'm drawn to urban oddities, colourful collisions, deep perspective and playful geometry. To capture the most compelling stories I prefer to shoot spontaneously, unbound by genre or subject.
