Holi Open Edition 1 Photograph

Rusty plaques, crumbling walls –I hadn’t thought they’d ever be the subject of my frames, when I first took up street photography. Soon enough, though, as I roamed Mumbai’s streets, looking for the perfect image, the patterns and textures of the ordinary, “ugly” objects began to intrigue me. In fact, they began to seem like they belonged in a painting. The idea of finding beauty in the mundane and the supposedly unsightly is what has inspired me. A doorway, a pile of logs, the rusting edge of a cot, the shutters of a shop with the paintpeeling off them –they all find place and a new identity in my work. I play around with textures, colours and shapes to create a distinct set of pictures that seek to tell the ‘untold story’. I am a JJ School of Art alumna, studied Commercial Arts, but Fine Arts had always interested me. After 14 years in advertising, I felt like it was time to do work that was for myself. I was drawn towards abstraction, and the idea that if only you shifted your perspective, something entirely ordinary could become beautiful and special. So, the photographs—of otherwise-ignored objects through my eye—began to resemble paintings.
