About The Artwork

A minimalist frame with a neon sign of a closed hotel is a triptych built on the contrasts of black and gray - two non-colors producing an ambiguous play with space, reality and its reflection as a shadow of reality. The photograph comes from the series "Hotels" based on one of the oldest cultural topos of homo viator. Here it has a clear Freudian genesis: it dialogues with various cultural and artistic codes produced by the figure of a hotel. At the same time it is a transmediation with modernist photography and its specific aesthetic vision of the city, as well as with modernist cinema from the kammerspiele trend (Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau, 1924), or with cinema noire and its culture of film stills. In my "remembering gaze" an inter-pictorial dialogue with those images is created, a network/constellation of meanings connected with the figure of the hotel as a psychoanalytic space, marked in a special way by the experience of travel, loneliness, strangeness, loss, and the traditional place and witness of the crime from detective novels and crime films, as in Hitchcock's "Psycho", whose dark atmosphere also influenced the disturbing atmosphere of this photograph. (ml) Digital print on Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Baryta 315g (semi-flash), archival paper, acid-free Certificate of Authenticity. Archived file: L1120777.DNG
