About The Artwork

Derek Walker doesn't apologise for his choice of a default font and this will no doubt make designers turn to drink and typoholoics consider rehab. For the current 'I could' series the artist has chosen what he calls a 'cheap plonk font' wanting to use a style of character that creates the right impersonal tone, flat and emotionless leaving a lurid aftertaste. It was important for him to avoid being blinded by font paralysis and after looking for a design that would neither shout nor whisper he decided upon the unfashionable, low end, Arial. 'This font is straight faced and contradicts the galling outburst of the phrases I have visualised'. Perhaps in this case choosing a font usually associated with supermarket posters is the right choice, it is cheap without warmth or feeling, lacking self indulgence. This series of work doesn't seem to do Walker any favours within the art and design community but then it's clear that Walker isn't trying to please anyone. The use of narrative as a visual form of expression is nothing new. Word play is delivered through letter and matter. Walker uses signage and printmaking letters sometimes cropped and laid out with no spaces between words to force the viewer slow down and avoid quickly reading the statement. Instead the viewer is invited to decipher the structure of the sentence allowing time to absorb the surface his painting demanding that they are not just read but looked too. Surfaces and expression too appear in the work through nods and gestures of abstract expression. Words played out across the surface seem mundane and suggestive even troubled and afflicted in thought. His textscapes are not of narrative illustration but rather more abstract expressive play with words. Gritty, imperfect Walker’s words and phrases are cropped from popular culture, movies, quotes, books and conversations in pubs. When applied within the context of art; their meanings become obscured through marks and gesture to produce imagery rather than simply word play.
