About The Artwork

"Stepping away from the light, Light Travelers poetically penetrates through darkness" Zoey Zha,That’s Shanghai Magazine, October 2014 The Light Travelers series was born in Shanghai. They belong to the city lights and the immensity of Chinese mega-cities, invoking the feelings of wonder, but also loneliness and strangeness one experiences in such metropolises, wherever they are in the world. They are about our sense of intimate fragility confronted with a dehumanized, endlessly communicating, overpowering society that often leads to a sense of absolute isolation. The Light Travelers are shot at night or in places without natural daylight. I rely upon my "portable studio," in conjunction with LEDs, to create these crepuscular, synthetically-coloured ambiances. I set short-lived and meticulously-staged studios up on-site, wherever I discover public or private locations containing the special conditions that I’m looking for. I spend days tracking down such places in China (Shanghai, Hangzhou, Hong Kong) or in European cities such as Paris and Venice. I'm always on the lookout for these locations, or devising and staging particular environments in my own studio in Aix-en-Provence. I deliberately create a distortion in the perception of reality thanks to inversions of scale. By experiencing these constructed landscapes through the perspective of their tiny protagonists, the viewer is projected into an immensity of space. This sense of illusion re-stages our childhood perceptions, confronting us once again with a sense of our relative scale and our place in the universe.
