About The Artwork

"Feeding your Demons" is a Buddhist therapeutic practice that inspired this series. "Demons are not bloodthirsty ghouls waiting for us in dark corners. Demons are within us. They are our obsessions and fears, feelings of insecurity, chronic illnesses, or common problems like depression, anxiety, and addiction. Feeding our demons rather than fighting them may seem to contradict the conventional approach of attacking and attempting to eliminate that which assails us, but it turns out to be a remarkable alternative and an effective path to liberation from all dichotomies." This series is an attempt at capturing the faces of my personal inner Demons during a global pandemic, as part of the process of bringing them into awareness and addressing them. The black and white medium is the perfect depiction of the inner duality we all experience, the two extremes being the very fabric of our concocted realities. The incorporeal quality reflects that these Demons are created by our minds and don't have an independent existent. This is both the trap and the key to liberation.

A visual artist and an architect, Andreea Hriscu was born in Bucharest, Romania in 1984. She studied architecture at UAUIM, Bucharest, from where she graduated with an advanced studies degree.  Her abstract art, mainly black and white painting and photography, originates from the need to address existential anxiety, using art as a self therapy tool. She opened her first solo exhibition in April 2016 at the Romanian Cultural Institute in Beijing, China. Her use of ink reminds us of the traditional Chinese paintings, but a closer look reveals a totally new and original technique. Intriguing in their appearance the paintings depict organic compositions that hold hidden messages. The pictures created put the mind in search for meaning, and each person sees something else in them. In this way the paintings become personal both for the painter and for the viewer. What for the painter is a therapeutic tool, for the viewer becomes a mirror into their own subconscious. While in China, in addition to her solo exhibition she participated in a number of group exhibitions, and held Painting performances in collaboration with musicians in Beijing, Bangkok and Berlin.  She is currently based in Berlin, Germany
