"The Shakespeare’s Ophelia it’s a complex character, and in opposition to other characters, reveals social dynamics that describe an underlying reality of an entire era. This fragile adolescent doesn’t plan to follow her will at any time, given that it has been strongly repressed from her family and the social structure of the time. What seemed the only way out, was a passive death, and even so wasn’t a choice either. Let herself go without even avoiding to die drowned was some sort of fate for her. There was no will or identity, there was no individual. Elisabeth Siddall, painter, poet and finally model, poses for Millais in cold waters and due to the negligence of the painter, contracted for it, a severe pneumonia. Siddall commits suicide with laudanum in response to the infidelities of Rossetti, her husband. The ghost of Ophelia is materialised in the abandonment and death that traps this artist in a renewed tragedy. The repeated representations permeate in our unconscious accompanying us on the vital journey as omnipresent ghosts. They remind us of what is acceptable to society, and therefore, what we must emulate to survive in organised society. In this project, Ophelia rebels to that imposed and previously self-accepted destiny." More info at https://beatrizglezsa.com/#/insurgent-ophelia-a-contemporary-representation/
