About The Artwork

This image is from a body of work entitled, "Me, My Selfies, and I." I began working on this series in October of 2015 and continue working on it today. I am fascinated with today's technology and its profound influence on the photographic world. Selfies have become a phenomenon that is out of control. Self-documentation is something that I have based this project around and I am interested in the sociology and meaning behind these modern day cartes-de-visite. This image is the first time I have used Photoshop effects, and initially I was just playing around without thinking about the project but something pulled me in. The amount of images we take of ourselves is immense and behind each selfie are multiple selfies, the ones we discard. The Photoshop distorted elements create a glitchy, chaotic, and confusing atmosphere that I found really successful for the series. I also believe that selfies can be incredibly deceiving and usually are enhanced before put out on social media. So these glitchy elements mimic that lack of authenticity that we find in selfies. Casual Version: I have a thirst for all things experimental in the world of photography. I channel that energy through my projects involving darkroom alternative processes and digital multiple exposures. I like confusing my viewer, making them question what they see. I like to think of my alternative processes work as a whole bunch of Rorschach Tests. I also like silkscreening, Sour Patch Kids, and a cold can of Diet Coke. Amateur cat enthusiast as well. If I'm not at home, I'm in the darkroom. Fancy Version: Jordan Kyler is a fine arts photographer from Staunton, Virginia, currently based out of Fredericksburg, Virginia. She received her Bachelor's of Arts degree from the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Virginia. While attending UMW, she studied Studio Art with an emphasis in film and digital photography. In addition to photography, Kyler also has a love for serigraphy and actively works in the medium. Her photography has been featured in publications including Richmond Magazine and Whurk. She served as the photography editor for the University of Mary Washington's newspaper The Blue and Gray Press (formerly known as The Bullet) and spent the summer of 2014 working as a personal intern for National Geographic photographer and Ripple Effect Images founder Annie Griffiths. Kyler has been exhibited in a number of venues in the Fredericksburg area. Kyler will begin her first year of graduate school in the fall of 2015 at the Maryland Institute College of Art (also known as MICA) in Baltimore, Maryland, where she will receive her Masters of Fine Arts in Photographic and Electronic Media in the Spring of 2017.
