About The Artwork

Polyptych IRA or The destruction of the world. BELLUM project. 90x90x3 cm. Photo encaustic. 12 images on wooden board 24x18x1,5 cm. 2019. Limited edition.  Technique: The work is a photograph transferred on wooden board and afterwards processed with an encaustic of natural waxes and natural resins. The board is of poplar wood size 90x90x1,5 cm and are glued 12 plates with 24x18x1,5 cm photographs. Bellum in Latin means War and it is the title of this work of mine composed of ten panels. The works tell ancient myths, divinities of distant civilizations scattered throughout the continents. Their stories are terrible and still make us reflect because nothing or too little seems to have changed in the deep nature of man. The woman in the photographs is an allegory of humanity with all its violence and desire for self-destruction. The twelve photographs contained in each work are sometimes a tale of wickedness and cruelty, sometimes of despair, other times the attempt to recompose and rebirth of the human race. Unfortunately, war is not only in the world; it is also in each of us who are prey to modern myths, and to the anxieties and frustrations produced by them. Even today people are capable of atrocities towards their peers and their own relatives, often living in a state of inner war that becomes aggressiveness towards others. Ira was the Roman equivalent of Lyssa, Goddess or spirit personified of furious anger, fury, frenzy gone mad in Greek mythology. She was one of the nannies of Eros and is the daughter of Nix, who became pregnant with drops of blood of Uranus when he was castrated. She represents a rather ruthless and many faceted character, above all of cruelty which, however, while representing pure madness is characterized by a part of reason, as becomes all demons.

Mine is a continuous search for synthesis between form and content, ethics and aesthetics. My works are emotional photographs, surreal, black and white, seemingly monochrome, or with strong colors, with a large presence of black and dark tones. In recent years they have increasingly incorporated a variety of materials since for me, materials such as paper, woods, beeswax, natural varnishes and whatever else is useful are very important, because they give physicality, depth and tactility to my photographs.  With the aesthetic and formal expression, in my works, is mixed a strong conceptual elaboration, because I know I do not tell an objective reality but rather show stories of people, concepts and worlds as I feel them through the filters of my experience, my culture and my feeling. In addition, each of my cycles of work is a visual transposition of themes that I have been passionate about and have studied for months or years. It is a way for me to put my knowledge on paper and my need to share it. No less important to me is the presence of a deep and constant research on the relationship between the photographer and the camera and the entire photographic process.
