The social, cultural and spiritual implications of dance have been represented in innumerable expressions of art. Dance as a nonverbal form of communication expresses ideas and emotions. It is movement, change, entertainment, emotional release, ecstasy, liberation, freedom, trance, pleasure and consciousness. This body of work is an approximation to the essence of “Joropo”, a traditional Colombian dance that has its origins in Flemish and Andalusian dances. Its name comes from the Arabic word xarop, which means “syrup”; a syrup of expressions of the haughtiness, gallantry and chauvinism of its people.“Joropo” aims to capture the Latin happiness and joy reflected in the spiral-like dance of which submission and social order are the subject.
