About The Artwork

Digital print on Hahnemühle Baryta paper 75 x 114 cm | Edition of 5 + 2AP 40x60 cm | Edition of 5 + 2AP A photo and interview was featured in British journal of Photography. Goran Turnšek’s project, where he emulates his late grandfather Jakob, anonymity speaks of the impossibility of taking another’s place, but also of the impersonal nature of choreographed dance. “Dancers aren’t the goal in a performance, rather a medium,” he says. (British Journal of Photography #7842: The Portraiture Issue, Written by Tom Seymour and Diane Smyth) Project 'Jakob' is a photographic research about the artist's grandfather Jakob Emeršič who accidentally got killed during hunting in 1993. Through self-portaits the artist reveals his grandfather's memories; how he walked and stood as well as the stories being told by his family. The project took place in a 'for sale house' in Goran's native village Zabovci in Slovenia, where he lived together with his grandparents for several years. The 70's decoration in the house depicts the nostalgia from Yugoslavian times; something that might be lost for ever once the house is sold. Goran used the house as a stage on which he acts his grandfather's daily rituals such as washing, grafting apples, heating up the house and getting himself a drink. The project was presented as photo exhibition and a book.

The relationship between the body and the space in which it is located plays an important role. In his photography he used sequences, diptychs and loose photographs he finds essential to tell his story. He often plays with obscurity and this refers to both the anonymity of the person and the anonymity of the source of the subject.Topics to be found in his work are identity, perservation en impermanence. His photography publications, photo books, videos, expositions and performance are an integral part of his work.
