About The Artwork

"Tachles, It's hard to believe, but I used to have my own airport." Curator's Statement: Sasha's long-term photographic project at the abandoned airport, Qalandia (Hebrew: Atarot), between Jerusalem and Ramallah, is of special interest for me. Since the time of the outbreak of the second Intifada the airport is in process of erosion and weathering. As I see it, this facility is a giant metaphor for the reality prevailing in our region. "An airport without airplanes becomes a living dead… The concrete track gets green pastures and flowering. Packs of street dogs - like passengers who missed the last plane - running, barking . British, Arabs, Jews... this airfield runway knew better days." As Sasha puts it. He uses the camera as a critical analytical tool. Through observation and interpretation he analyses complex systems of power relations that affect our perception of social reality. All this in order to raise questions that encourages the viewer to exercise discretion in relation to his or her position on issues at hand. Yossi Nahmias
