About The Artwork
In an old steam laundry, in the same street in Derby where I lived, was love. Dwarfed by the machines, she had to climb up to retrieve other peoples washing. This is not posed, but what the lady did all the time every day for a living. Some people exist as a memory only in a photograph, but some of these memories are essential to an understanding of who we are, so no apologies for being sentimental.

I am the photojournalist, born in Marylebone, London in 1949. I have had a number of occupations and abandoned photography completely between 1982 and 2006, when the destruction of Cardiff City centre to build a 2 billion euro shopping mall had results so visually fascinating in terms of our then altered behaviours that i started a long-term project that went on to include sports fans, flower shows and carnival parades, adding up to a reasonably comprehensive take on what we do in town when we are able. Unable to continue this now, I attempt other subjects.
