2019 / Alien Beauty
What would the world be like without these small but complicated miracles?
This Madagascan Beauty is considered one of the most impressive and appealing-looking lepidopterans(an order of insects that includes butterflies and moths) and found to be endemic to Madagascar. Its impressive and beautiful wings were used to make jewellery in the Victorian era.
Native Madagascan people call it adriandolo or lolonandriana, from lolo for "spirit" or "butterfly" and andriana for "noble" or "king", therefore meaning "noble butterfly", "noble spirit", "king butterfly" or "king spirit".
It is very colourful, though the iridescent parts of the wings do not have pigment; rather the colours originate from optical interference.

Studies have shown;
76% reduction in flying insects.
45% reduction in invertebrate insects.
In this series we like to show a glimpse of the beauty of insects in a different way by fusing it with more familiar beauty, photographed(side profile) and digitally drawn(face frontal).
Insects inhabited the earth even before the dinosaurs. They were the first to master airspace and specialized in the most diverse tasks such as pollinating plants and clearing up dead matter, they learned to live in balance with their world.
We would like to bring these wonders to the attention so that they too will be more appreciated and we as humanity will start to value their work and presence differently.
It would be a shame if we were the cause of their downfall and, indirectly, our own.
How can we protect our animals if we eliminate the basis on which we all live directly or indirectly?
