About The Artwork

This work is inspired by classical painting and early photography. In my art practice, I use the language of advertising and the semiotics (the study of meaning-making) to make explicit what is real or its counterpoint, fantasy. The lush styling in my constructed portraits suggest emotion and pleasure and imply narrative. This is fundamental to the nature of photography as explained by this quote from Lucy Soutter, "Caught in a state of permanent suspense vis a vis events that have just happened or are about to take place, photographs contain essential seeds of narratives that can never come to fruition except in the imagination." This photograph was made with a Hassleblad film camera.
