For the 2019 'Deceived with Ornament' show at her gallery in Copenhagen, Renata Maiblum said, "Ian Hoskin ́s works are repetitive images of colourful circles with dark background. Their appearance of three-dimensionality and lightness remind us of floating candies at amusement parks. The images are actually of tyres wrapped by manufacturers in various plastic foil. With the different wrappings and logos, they compete with each other for customers’ attention. Hoskin ́s simplicity of representation and his careful treatment show viewers the possibility of excavating beauty in everyday objects. Tyres possess significant importance in the life of their users. Hoskin's take here is the different attitudes we may have in relation to everyday objects at the centre of our lives." I was fascinated with the appeal and vivid colours: They looked edible, like sweets and I was drawn to make 'portraits' of as many variations as I could find. Sri Lanka is rapidly embracing car ownership. As with the West there is considerable congestion in some urban areas, but the purchase of new tyres remains a novelty there, hence the need to have an extra edge to attracting customers. This one is Menthé. Paper size 61 cm x 61 cm. Image size 57cm x 57 cm. Printed on Innova Smooth Cotton High White Matte 315gsm paper using Ultrachrome HDR inks. Signed, numbered, titled and dated on verso. Certificate of Authenticity included.
