The vagina is internal, a dark, tunnel without light into and out of which life is created and love and spirit make their journey. It is the passageway of life and creation, where all elements meet and begin their voyage. You witness a doorway, the rim of an urn. The body’s flower with its own smell and petals which open and close, with elastic folds and a maze-like structure reflecting light and dark, a deep triangle concealing secrets. The labium’s fold of flesh guard secret places, a secret garden. We see the gateway and all else is left up to the imagination, unfolding in an individual experience potentially associated to all living things. The silver-tongued portal can lead you anywhere conceptually, depending upon the essence of your own being – penetration, opening, physical, electricity, personality, access, the ego, the doors of heaven, climbing stairs, rising, heartbeat, filling, igniting the senses, physical focus of the living experience, inspiration, inhaling, enlivening, comparable to giving birth, focus on the V, pulsating with life, increase in blood flow and oxygen, a spiritual voyage, instinctual, crescendo, Eros, psyche, desperate desire to reach goal, a physical link to our higher self or any other dimension. The labium could be a symbolic tool for crossing sexual and gender boundaries. God may enter your soul through pleasure at the V-shaped doorway, your spiritual place, and bring joy and life into the microcosm of the world, at one of many departure points. This is our homeland, not a source of embarrassment. The vagina has an honorable relationship with our being. Like our mouth, it is a fitting, embracing muscle with a life of its own that sucks in energy, takes it on a creative voyage through conception and spits out the product. Are these photographs frightening? If so why? Why is the subject taboo? Will our culture not accept this place? Have we been indoctrinated to fear the power inherent? From where could the fear have come? Did we abuse the power in times when the head ruled more efficiently than the spirit? We may have now evolved to an awakening point from lessons that we can find only within ourselves. Are we afraid of those higher places, the hidden pleasure or where the dark place leads us? Here are the labium as you have probably never seen them before: mutable, transitional, transforming, curving and hanging, swollen and flaccid, appealing to all the senses, smell, touch, sight, sound. In this body of work labium are the iconic symbols of the gateway and sentinel of ideas, provokers of thought.
