Title | MUSINGS IN HEAVEN XL
Type | Original Gold Leaf Cyanotype
Inspiration | A feminine take on the Roman god of new beginnings
Year | 2020
Materials | Cyanotype, handmade paper, 24-carat gold leaf
This artwork is a feminine take on the ancient Roman God of new beginnings. Looking to the past and the future with two faces, it is a representation of self-reflection, transition, growth and time. A depiction of both public and private faces and in what means we choose to reveal them.
Musings In Heaven XL (Framed) was created by constructing a hand-cut collage using female photographic portraiture and hand-printed surface textures from chemigrams.
After coating the handmade paper with light-sensitive chemistry, it is left to dry in a dark room. The large scale negative is then contact printed onto the paper by exposing to daylight (UV rays). The print is then processed by thoroughly washing in water to remove any unexposed solution. It can then be hung to dry, developing to full density Prussian blue after 24 hours. Once the image is fixed it is hand finished with 24-carat gold leaf.

This is taken from a series of cyanotypes based on females in history and mythology. Ones who particularly inspire me, deserve to be recognised and celebrated as powerful figures in time.
I want to visually tell a story with each piece to celebrate the lives of these amazing women using portraiture, symbolism and surrealism.
I choose to initially create my pieces using a combination of collage made up of original photographs, paintings, illustrations and found imagery. Once completed, I photograph and print large scale negatives ready for cyanotype printing.
I expose all my pieces in natural light for up to a couple of weeks. Printing in all weather conditions, doing everything by eye and in the most organic way possible, this enables me to be at one with each piece I create.
