About The Artwork

Not Dead Yet was created in reference to the 17th century Dutch flower paintings, “vanitas” and the fragility of life. The bouquets of flowers depicted in the images were gathered by the artist after they were discarded by florist and deemed as no longer desirable. As in the early days of photography, before the negative and cameras were scientifically developed, the flowers were placed directly on paper coated with salt and silver nitrate. A popular printing technique in the middle of the 19th Century, created by one of the inventors of photography William H. Talbot. In addition to the expected chemical interaction, the flowers gave spots of colour to a print that would otherwise be monochrome. The original print was not fixed and remained exposed to small levels of UV light, creating an evolving still life, or a still life developing in time until the image darkened completely. Selected moments of the image’s evolution, mainly during its maturity, were captured by a camera and frozen in time. Like the flower Dutch paintings, these photos are here to enjoy long after the flowers depicted in them and the images themselves have passed.
